Hi, I'm Dory. Welcome to........ummmm, ummmm, oh yeah, the coral reef. Hi, I'm Dory and ummm, ummmm, oh dear, I forgot. Oh yes, I have short term memory loss and......... Hi, I'm Dory and welcome to..............uhhhhh, the coral reef. I've forgotten who all my friend are on the reef and I can't remember anything about them. Will you help me? Hi , I'm Dory, who are you? I have short term memory loss and I live, ughh, I can't remember where I live, but I know it's in danger and I need your help.
Thankfully, Dory ran into a bunch of Garvin's Scuba Academy (GSA) cadets today, and they agreed to help her learn about her friends on the reef and explore why her home was in danger. Cadets determined which corals and other animals each student would research this semester, and after determinations were made, students had some time in class to begin looking for information about their large animals.
In addition to the many research books available in class, I have also posted some helpful websites on the blog. These can be found under the pages section on the left side of the blog. For next week, students should bring their final copy of the large animal research as well as the building supplies to make their 3-D large animal. I will be grading large animal research next week and marking the final grade on the rubric; I will not go back and re-grade large animal research at the end of the semester. Please double check with your child next week to make sure the large animal research is in his or her binder.
In addition to our exploration of coral reefs this week, we also spent some time on Hands On Equations. Fifth graders reviewed their book 2 practice from last week and asked any questions they might have encountered. I then introduced the first lesson in book 3 (lesson 17). This lesson covers adding and subtracting both positive and negative integers, and we will continue working on that concept next week.
Fourth grade began working in book 2 with lesson 8, and students were introduced to the concept of the white pawn which is represented by (*). They learned that the same legal moves that were used for x can also be used for *
As we continue working through Hands On Equations, please know there is some support and help available if your child should need it. First, there is a Hands On Equation page on the left side of my blog which contains links to helpful You Tube videos. A couple summers ago some Target teachers worked for the county and they also created videos for every lesson. These videos are posted on the Microsoft 365 One Drive account and this is one of the reasons I asked each child to have a Microsoft 365 account. The directions for accessing these videos are on the blog page. In addition to the videos you and your child can watch at home, I will also be offering frequent help sessions. However, should your child need help when no help session is scheduled, he or she is always welcome to drop by in the morning before school for some extra help. I am usually available between 7:20 and 7:45 a.m.
