The Time Has Arrived!!! Science Olympiad Time!

Here at Vaughan we have a competative science team called Science Olympiad. The team is made up of 3rd - 5th grade students who love science and want to compete against other science loving students throughout the county and state. We meet each week to experiment and train in 18 state chosen events. In March we compete against other Cobb County SO teams and in May we compete against other Georgia SO teams.

If you like to watch channels like Discovery and Animal planet...It you like building things...If you like mixing things...If you spend your time reading nonfiction books about rocks, animals, chemicals, and the like you would be a perfect addition to our team! WE WANT YOU...YES YOU!

If you think you may be interested in "doing science" with us on the 2010-2011 Vaughan Science Olympiad team you will need to...

1. Download, look over, and fill out the attached application (see below).

2. Turn in application and event preference (see description of events below) by October 5th to Mrs. Bradley.

3. Receive you assigned tryout date.

4. Plan and practice an experiment that uses the scientific method.

5. Make transportation arrangements for tryout day.

6. Try out!!!

GA Tech K.I.D.S. Club for 2nd-5th Grade Students

Registration for our elementary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics outreach program has begun!  Our program, K.I.D.S. Club (Kids Interested in Discovering Science), invites 2nd-5th grade students to come to Georgia Tech’s campus to participate in hands-on learning experiences on select Saturdays during the school year. These programs are lead by Georgia Tech faculty and staff, graduate students, and K-12 teachers from across the metro area. Our goal is to provide students with a unique learning experience that will foster interest in STEM education through inquiry-based lessons and activities.

We want to inform parents in the metro area about this wonderful learning opportunity, and we ask your help in doing so. I have attached a flyer that you can easily distribute to parents and students to inform them of the program.

Science Olympians

I need your help!!! I would like for current members and SO hopefuls to meet from 2:15 - 3:30 on Wednesday, September 29th. We will be helping Mrs. Stamper set up some bottles for a few of the science night stations. Please let me know if you will be able to come via email or the comment box below. I will also use this time to share any SO information I receive between now and then. Don't forget to spread the word and talk up SO. We want to build another great team this year! 

How do trees change through the year?

 

Recently the 2nd grade students went outside to observe two trees. One tree is deciduous while the other is coniferous. The students decided to observe these trees 3 more times throughout the year to see how they change. The boys and girls made careful observations and diagrammed their findings. The Mighty Elephant Is Afraid Of . . . . Ants?

First it was bees, now it turns out that the world's largest land animal - the African elephant, may be afraid of an even smaller insect - the tiny ant!

How do the number of Alka-Seltzer tablets affect the amount of gas that will be produced when mixed with water?

Today during Super Specials our 1st graders investigated this question. See the attached video to view some of their hypotheses, results, and conclusions. How could you modify this experiment to make a great science fair project?

Our local entomologist!

Last week, one of our local scientists (an entomologist on this occasion) found a fabulous insect in the bus port. The insect was an American Walking Stick. We had a wonderful time getting up close and personal with such a wonderful specimen. If you would like to read more about this type of insect follow the link below.
