PALS needs help! PALS (Parent Assisted Learning Support) is a PTSA committee that functions as a partnership between professional staff, parent volunteers and students. We provide free tutoring for children in grades K-3 that need some extra guidance in reading. It is a wonderful program that is in need of more volunteers. If you have 1 hour a week that you can spare to help a child with their reading skills, please contact Amy Vitelli at
amynzach@yahoo.com. It is an easy, rewarding way to lend a hand to an amazing child.
The 1st and 2nd placed Reflections winners photography and visual arts entries are on display at the Stevie B’s on Dallas Hwy. They will be on display until spring break.
The Vaughan Chess Club would like to congratulate all of our Fall participants, Including our Champions, Aidan Giavelli and Kaleb Pollard!

Electronics Recycling
We will be holding an Electronics Recycle Day fundraising event on Saturday, February 5th at Harrison High School. Our recycle days have become very popular with the community and we feel this is an excellent opportunity to raise money to support the 2010 – 2011 HHS Bands program.
Here’s how the fundraising event works:
People bring items to be recycled such as computers, power tools, heavy metals, lawnmowers, cell phones, telephone chargers, power cables, fax machines, TVs, etc. to Harrison on Saturday, February 5th between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. There is a $10.00 donation per car/family for everything (except TVs). 100% of the donation goes to the HHS Bands program. There is a $20.00 donation for 1 TV/monitor and $15.00 each for 2 or more. A portion of this amount goes to HHS Bands as well. Donations are tax deductible. We are partnering with Federal Recyclers, an EPA registered company, who will be on-site with their trucks to collect the recyclables. The more people participate, the more money we raise!
A Night of Jazz and An Afternoon of Jazz
Mark your calendars for the annual Afternoon and Night of Jazz, Friday February 11! This is an event that both kids and parents always enjoy. Come listen to some jazz, swing, and Big Band music! We’ve stepped it up a notch this year, moving to the beautiful Strand Theater on the Marietta Square. What a great opportunity to get out and enjoy an evening on the town! There are two shows available to fit your busy schedule.
An Afternoon of Jazz begins at 4:00pm, and features the talents of all three Harrison Jazz ensembles. We have also added the KSU Jazz Combo to the afternoon show. Hey, this earlier show might be a great session for your neighbors and friends who have younger kids, or how about those more mature neighbors and friends who don’t like to stay out late. Tickets are $10 each.
A Night of Jazz begins at 7:00pm. This is a “Not Too Be Missed” event. This show also features all three Harrison Jazz ensembles. And if that isn’t enough, we are proud to welcome the nationally acclaimed Kennesaw State University Jazz Combo, featuring soloist Umcolisi Terrell. This promises to be the most entertaining Night of Jazz ever! Tickets are $15 each.
Plenty of Free Parking is available for both events at the parking garage directly across the street from the Strand Theater, on Cherokee Street. Advance tickets will be available from Carla McGuire cpmcguire@msn.com, Deana Thompson datrn@bellsouth.net, any Jazz Band student, or by emailing NightofJazz@harrisonbands.org. Tickets will also be available at the door. Come join us on Friday, February 11, 2011 at the beautiful Strand Theater on the Marietta Square. We look forward to seeing you there!
