Last Week we had lessons in class and in the media center so now we are ready to start our research! In addition, I completed many lessons on how to access the Cobb Virtual Library and how to search for articles on the Internet. If your child does not have an artile yet, please help them get one printed out as soon as possible.
Monday - 1/31
We started by making an outline. Some students are doing people of the Revolutionary War and others are doing Planets. We also started reading and taking notes only from our research book. The students will be reading their book in the classroom alot this week. Next, we will be categorizing our index cards into the outlines we created (Example: Early Life (0-20) includes born, where they grew up, family, education, etc., Charcter Traits, Important Contributions and Interesting Facts). If they are doing planet we categorized our outline into: History and Where Planet is located, Rings/Moons/Weather, What you can see, and Interesting Facts. This has created a great starting point for our research. I do expect children to be working as I pull small group to teach informational reading and writing skills.

Due to the missed school days this week we will be extending our WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE! Please bring any gently used or new winter clothing and place in the bins by the doors! Thank you!
The 1st and 2nd placed Reflections winners photography and visual arts entries are on display at the Stevie B’s on Dallas Hwy. They will be on display until spring break.
Vaughan Elementary School will be hosting the Rally Foundation Annual Benefit Variety Shows on Thursday & Friday, February 17 & 18 at 6:30 pm.
We are looking for a group of Vaughan parents who would like to take over maintaing the bulletin boards for the 2011-2012 school year. Our fabulous 'bulletin board babes' will be moving on with their children into middle school. Grammar page 26 - Types of Sentences - please be sure the children know, the terms: CRCT uses these terms so it is important they know the difference.
Study Spelling - children have spelling sheet pages 141 and 142 to study from spent alot of time yesterday and today on these words - depending upon how you emphasize the syllables the word becomes a noun or a verb. Target please study from pages 141 and 142.

Monday - MLK Holiday
CRCT practice Homework This week ~ Attached are PDF Files. Please be sure to print them off as your child will be required to return them each day as I will be going over questions and reteaching if needed. Please make sure they are doing UNRAVVEL and using their strategies!!!! These practice pages were taken from the New Georgia Test Prep (Spectrum) Grade 4 that are alligned to our standards. Please let me know if you cannot access them so I can copy it for your child. I have uploaded each individually rather than one big file. If I email it will take up a huge amount of space.
Wednesday, CRCT Reading is Page 9 - Identifying Character
Read and Record - each guided reading group received a book that they are required to read and complete their night write this week
Social Stuides - Colonies - read pages 132 - 135. Today I taught how to take headings and change them into questions (pages 132 and 133 only). Then, I modeled how to take notes from their reading. The children practiced this strategy in class and now need to practice for homework. We will be working out of the Social Stuides books all week and reading about 4-5 pages each night. We also talked about making sure they understand the "vocabulary" terms before starting to read and how to use the glossary to understand those words before reading. So, when they come to vocabulary words they need to look them up in the glossary - they don't need to write the definitions down
