1. Read and Record - 2 night writes due this week
2. Math - PW65 - we started our Geometry Unit and discussed How do I identify and draw points, lines, line segments, rays and planes.  The homework should be easy for students.  Please discuss the key vocabulary with your child tonight - LESSON 12.1 on Math Book page 254

Point - Location in space .

Line - is a straight path of points that continues without end in both directions - it has no endpoints

Line segment - is part of a line, it has two endpoints and all the points between them.  It is the shortest distance between two points

Ray -  is part of a line.  It has one endpoint and continues without end in one direction.

Plane - is a flat surface of points that continues without end in all directions.  A plane is named by at least three points in a plane

Read and Record - remember 2 Night Writes this week

Math - page 255 in math book - Lesson 12.1 - numbers 5 through 26 on notebook paper - please head your paper corrected - we reviwed key terms and made a concentration game with our vocabulary words today.  The children have these in their math book and are to play the game with a parent or sibbling.  We will be doing this for the whole geometry unit.  We also learned about coordinate grids and and the x and y axis today in making line plots (review of third grade skill).  Please pay attention to the CRCT questions on the practice pages in the math book - these are really good practice questions for CRCT. 

Grammar - oh my!!!!  GRAMMAR PAGE 10 The children have forgotten what simple and complete subjects are.  This is a third grade skill and should be really a review!  I did a lesson today and reviwed page 9 - page 10 is due for homework.  The editing is very tricky but have the children try it and answers will vary!

Monday, November 15

1. Read and Record - 2 Night Writes Due This Week
2. Math - PW 56 - we are continuing to explore relationships in division between the divident, divisor, quotient and remainder - What happens to the quotient if I change the divisor - was our lesson today!
3. Native American - Each group is to research and know all about their tribe.  Tonight I asked each child to print off at least three pictures from the internet - one picture about culture, clothes, and housing or any other picutre that represents their tribe well.  Your child should know what indian tribe.  They are doing the research in class, making a poster presentation, and making a Native American Game in art class .

1. Read and Record - two night writes are due this week
2. Math - PW57 - Today we took an assessment of division and all the concepts we have learned so far.  This is how I group with small guided math groups - there are times when I cannot give advanced noticed because I try and create benchmark assessments along the way for each concept being taught. The biggest issue I am seeing is solving word problems using division and how to intrepret the remainder.


 Example:  Gigi owns a restaurant.  Tonight there are 138 guests.  Each table in the restaurant seats 4 quests.  How many of Gigi's tables have guest seated at them. 

Most children will solve the problem and then not know how to intrepret the remainder.  The answer is not 34 remainder 2 but rather I have two people left over - what am I going to do with them.  I would not add two more tables but only 1 because those 2 can sit at one more table.  Therefore the answer would be 35 tables.  They are tricky but we are practicing. 

The homework tonight was designed to practice and "think" about how the remaider affected the quotient.

Wednesday, November 17th

1. Read and Record - two night writes are due this week
2. Math - 6 problems written on notebook paper - they can use graph paper. 

The lesson today was "How do I divide 2 or 3 digit dividents by 2 digit divisors - I showed the children how to use estimation and rounding strategies.  Then we solved using long division. 

Thursday - November 18, 2010

1. Read and Record - two night writes due this week
2. Study Spelling - Spelling Test Unit 33 before we go out on break - I didn't want to carry on until after the break
3. Writing - the children are working on response to literature.  We read a book called For the Love of Aumtum by Patricia Polacco and we have worked on a graphic organizer and I modeled and worked with what is needed:  Introductory Paragraph, Summary, Connections, and Conclusion and what is needed in each paragraph.  We have written our rough draft and we are working on the final copy  - Tonight children are to work with a parent or older sibbling to help them with their editing.  Today we edited and they are to use a different color pen than today to show me they again went through the editing process.  Please DO NOT WRITE for them but rather ask them to add details or juicy color words or to make their sentence flow by using transition words.  They will be working on their final copies tomorrow!!!!  I have attached a good rough draft for you to review.

1. Read and Record - 2 Night Writes this week - I will be checking and grading Night Writes from last week this week
2. Math PW 39 - Multiplication Practice - Today we learned about using our mental math strategies to help us solve word problems involving multiplication and division with zeros.  I have now created a MATH WALL that children can access and use for help with these strategies.  We also are rotating through guided math workstations and I have created some fun games and skills to maintain for our math standards for the 1st 9 weeks and 2nd nine weeks. 
3. Comprehension Passages - I have loaded comprehension passages for CRCT practice.  In reading, we have been working on details - therefore, the first reading passages is titled Honoring Heroes and has a page 2.  The children MUST be using their UNRAAVEL strategies.  These passages are optional but I have scanned a passage per night!!!  If you want to print them off and have your child bring them in that would be great:

1. Read and Record - Make sure you have two night writes for the week
2. Math - PW 44 - today we finished reviewing mental strategies we use to help with multiplication and division.  We moved to three digit by 2 digits and how we use those mental math strategies to help us solve word problems.  I am working in small group guided math this week and really ensuring the skills from last 9 weeks are mastered as well as extended groups that I can extend
3. Fun Run tomorrow - dress appropriately - we start at 12 noon!!!!!!  Let's Go Lightening Thieves!!!!

• Social Stuides Weekly Reading - Pages 14 - 27 - Complete Workbook Pages 5 and 6 - this will be due on Friday 11/5 that is about 2 pages per night.  You may count these toward your reading on your log
• ****IMPORTANT**** Please make sure your child is bringing their Social Studies book bank and fourth this week - we are working out of them.

1. Read and Record - Night Writes are due - I have included a rubric in your child's Night Write Journal and have conferenced with them about how to make their night writes better
2. Math - PW 42 - Multiplying with Zeros - I did a lesson on this last week so the children should remember how to do it.  We also did alot of division today using Base 10 Blocks as a model and using the step by step process.  This is going to take time and practice.
3. Social Studies Books and Workbooks are due tomorrow - I will be checking and reviewing homework from the workbook pages assigned on Monday - Please help your child remember to bring it back
