Hi Vaughan Parents,

I hope that by now you are completely aware that the Boosterthon Fun Run Kicks Off this coming Monday November 1^st with school-wide Pep Rallies in the gym! 

Parent volunteers are welcome to meet up in the gym by 12:10pm and get ready to have a good, loud time!  You will get a really good idea of just how much fun and excitement is generated throughout this 9 day interactive fundraising program=)  

 

Students will be able to start collecting pledges on Monday November 1^st and pledges can be safely and securely entered on-line at our Vaughan Elementary Mini Boosterthon Site at http://boosterthoninfo.com/vaughanrockets/ from Mon Nov 1^st through Tues Nov 9^th.  Information will be sent home with each student this Monday for you to review.

Team Days start on Wed Nov 3rd and go through Tues Nov 9^th where Chris Magouyrk and his Boosterthon Team Members will be on our school campus spending 4-6 min in the classrooms to teach character lessons and award incentives. 

Fundraising is necessary to be able to support our school and our teachers so that our kids can have the best possible learning opportunities and classroom environment.  We expect the Boosterthon Fun Run Program to enable us reach our financial fundraising goals, while also promoting physical fitness as well as character education...and best of all, it is FUN!!!  The Boosterthon Fun Run Team spends 200-300 hours organizing and running the event, freeing up our teachers and administrators to focus on education!  Finally, remember that EVERY student will receive a “Boosterthon All-Star” t-shirt and gets to participate in the Fun Run regardless of pledges raised.

Please know up front that:

• Students will run a MAXIMUM of 35 laps with an average expected lap count of 25-35 laps.
• ANY pledge amount per lap is acceptable: no amount is too small...or too large=)
• Flat donations are gladly accepted as well and will be calculated by a per-lap amount for tracking student pledges.
• We expect that while 28% of the donations may come from parents, 72% of donations will come from others!
• We are asking all parents to help connect your students with 10 potential sponsors; please allow your students to call & explain what they are doing.
• We understand that not every friend, neighbor or family member can give a pledge. Use your judgment in helping determine who your child can ask for pledges.
• Students will be encouraged to, collectively, gather pledges from all 50 states and reach outside our neighborhoods and local community.
• Our Fundraising Goal is $25,000 to help our school purchase:

o   Some ELMO Document Cameras for classrooms

o   First in Math on line math program for use in school as well as at home

o   Handwriting Books

 

• The FUN RUN takes place on WEDNESDAY Nov 10^th!!!

The Boosterthon Fun Run will take place at a 1/16^th mile track by the Bus Port

There will be 3 rounds of 1 hour Fun Runs.  Approx start times:

K-1 will start at 10am

2-3 will start at 11am

4-5 will start at 12 noon

Rain plan:  Fun Run will take place same day in the Gym during specials

Boosterthon will provide tunnel, music, water, cups and sharpies

Volunteers/Room Parents needed to mark laps on kids’ shirts as they run

Teachers can then be freed up to take pictures and cheer!

• All Pledged Money is due by Wed Nov 17th

 

 

This event is tons of fun, so all parents and family member are encouraged to come on out and cheer the kids on!

The PTSA Health and Wellness Committee would like to help you get your mind and body ready for our upcoming Boosterthon, so we will include a Healthy Tip for you each week as you prepare for Nov. 10th!!

This week's Tip focuses on Healthy Snacking and Family Exercise as well as a few Motivational quotes to help you prepare for Boosterthon!!

 

• Peel a banana and dip it in yogurt. Roll in crushed cereal and freeze.
• Spread celery sticks with peanut butter or low-fat cream cheese. Top with raisins.
• Stuff a whole-grain pita pocket with ricotta cheese and Granny Smith apple slices. Add a dash of cinnamon.
• Mix together ready-to-eat cereal, dried fruit and nuts in a sandwich bag for an on-the-go snack.
• Smear a scoop of frozen yogurt on two graham crackers and add sliced banana to make a yummy sandwich.

Vaughan’s Community Outreach program can assist many families within our own school community.  We need your help!  As the holiday season approaches, please open your heart to those in need.  Your small contribution, along with many others, can provide a feast to some families who otherwise may go without.

The Community Outreach collection barrel will be in the lobby from November 8 - 12.  Suggested items for donation are:

• Non-refrigerated pie shell

Again, we would like to thank everyone who participated one way or another with the Reflections Program.  We’ve had another successful year with this program and are so very proud of all of our participants.   All of the art work has been displayed on the cafeteria walls (Literature, Dance Choreography, Musical Composition, and Film Production displayed by list of participants), and will remain there until Friday, October 29.  After this date, your art work will be available for you to take home. 

 

Reminder, all of our first and second place winners have moved on to the next level (Tom Mathis Council [TMC]).   Congratulations to all of you.  After judging has taken place, if your artwork has won, you will receive an invitation to attend the TMC Award Ceremony, which will be held on Tuesday, November 30.

Science Homework

Science Homework will be coming home tomorrow.  The children will have to read assigned pages and answer questions in their Science Workbook.  This will not be due until Friday.  Remember, content text books are written at a higher level so you will need to help with the reading.  This will be posted on my blog as well as in your child's agenda with a label.  Remember it is not due until Friday

Suggestion:  Have your child to the reading first themselves.  Then, have them complete the work book page that accompanies the pages read.  They must be answering question with a complete sentence.

Example:  What are the three cloud forms?  The three cloud forms are......................it will not be accepted if it is not written in a complete sentence.  Your child WILL HAVE to redo their work.

4. Math - Practice and Problem Solving pg 207  #1 through 16 on notebook paper - please make sure you are neat and organized - circle your number for the problem. 


The children worked on their editors review today, characters, and setting.  They will have their rough drafts for their cereal box.  You can either type it or have them write it.  Today I talked about being consistent meaning if you typed the summary you probably want to type out the other parts.  If you are using the summary you wrote, you will probably want to write it out.  It was hard for me to get the paper because everyone's cereal boxes are different sizes.

Sample Summary for Cereal Box Report

Today, Friday October 23rd the children work on their final copy of their summary.  They have options on how they want to put it on their cereal box.  They can go home and type it out or they can use their final copy and paste it right on the box.  It is up to you and your child. 

On Monday, the children will be writing an editors review - this is simply a book recommendation.  They have to included "I give this book a 7 out of 10 stars" because...........................

The editors review goes on the spine of the cereal box.

The characters and setting goes on the other spine of the cereal box.  I told the children they only have to include 3 characters and one setting.  Please follow the rubric for these. 

I hope I have helped make a home project more managable and I learned a great deal how to make my writing instruction more meaningful.  I just like when the project belongs to the child and it doesn't become and parent project.

1. Read and Record - I have night writes and I will be handing out notebooks during conferences
2. Math - Math Sheet on Yellow Paper - 6 problems - three digit by 2 digit multiplication
3. Introduction for Book Summaries - the children are to take home what they learned today, share it with a parent and revise their introductory paragraphs.  Please make sure they bring their introductory paragraphs back along with their story maps.  We will be working on the body (summary) tomorrow and they need their story maps to do this. 

Introductory paragraphs should include:  Title of the Book and underline it, the author, the type of book (genre) and a reason why you chose the book and two readson why you like to read those types of books.

Sample:  Frindle by Andrew Clements is one of the best realistic fiction books that I have ever read.  I chose this book because it has a very powerful lesson for all teachers.  I like to read books about student and teachers.  I always try to put myself into the characters shoes.

Sample:  Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling is a great fantasy book because it has alot of action in it.  I chose this book because it has alot of fantasy creatures in it like a fierce dragon and a deadly mermaid.  It makes me feel like I am in a whole new world.

1. Read and Record
2. Writing- students completed their introduction in class yesterday and took it home to edit with parents.  They are working on their body also called the summary.  They will  need to go through the editing process with their rough drafts of their summaries at home tonight.  You may help them with it but please do not write it for them.  Help them include key events and good super sentences.  PLEASE BRING ALL WRITING MATERIALS TO CLASS TOMORROW.  This should include story map, introduction, and body(summary).  We will be working on conclusion and editors review tomorrow (Thursday).

The Kid Who Only Hit Homers

Sample Summary:  This books is about out a boy name Sylvester who is horrible at baseball until Mr. Baruth comes along.  Sylvester starts practicing with Mr. Baruth and he makes the baseball team.  The team is called The Redbirds.  Then, at Sylvester's first game he did really well.  Next, his friend takes him for a tasty treat because Sylvester does so well.  Mr. Baruth never misses Sylvester's games.  Sylvester's team made it to the championship game but someone didn't show up and that made Sylvester sad.  Sylvester ended up doing very poorly the day Mr. Baruth doesn't show up.  What will happen next!!!!!  Will Sylvester do well at his next game?  Will Mr. Baruth show up?

 2nd Sample:  In this book, two kids hear stranges noises as they walk past an old house.  A man named Mr. Lee lives there and he is not very nice.  The kids think Mr. Lee makes the noises to scare people away from his house.  Later they discover it is a family of racoons that is making all the noises.

2. Math - please study division - speed test coming soon - I don't want to tell the children because I want to see if they really know if for quick recall - long division coming next week

Writing - students worked on their conclusion today for their summary for their cereal box report.  They should take it home and revise if necessary.  They should have three seperate parts, Introduction, Body (Summary) and Conclusion.  Please have them read it aloud to you.  You may help them but DO NOT write it for them.  For example, ask does that make sense, how can you say that better, can you use a better verb.   We will be working on their final copies tomorrow.  The will need to have it ready to either put directly on their box or for typing purposes. 

Tomorrow we will be working on the editors review.  The editors review is a mini recommendation.  It should not be long.

Conclusion Example:  This book had a very powerful lesson, it taught me always to be yourself.  While reading the book, I felt excited for Abby, the main character because she had to deal with peer pressure from her friends.  I would recommend this book because it was funny, exciting, and helped me understand to be yourself.   Happy Reading!

You will see more writing come home over the next couple fo weeks.  We will be learning how to write a response to literature starting next week.

Math - Please Study our test is Wednesday morning - The Study Guide was completed in class today and reviewed all questions.   We had 9 students not return the math study guide after I told them they MUST return it so I could make sure I reviewed the rest of the study guide.  This does disappoint me greatly!!!!!
