*The Reading Log expectations have increased for the 3rd Nine Weeks. The students are now expected to read at least 120 minutes per week. We know they are all capable. Please sign the Reading Log on Sunday or daily next to where your child logs in his or her reading. Also remind your child that the reading log is a way for us to make the children accountable for the reading they do, so they should be putting in the time and effort. We are looking for quality over quantity. We will no longer let the children go back and add to the reading log after about 2 days have passed because we know they are unable to remember the time spent reading, unless they read the same amount every night.

CURRICULUM:
Reading Workshop- Last week, we reviewed nonfiction text features. At the end of the week we used our Mary Bethune biography to do a nonfiction text feature scavenger hunt. We also focused on sequencing words in nonfiction texts. The children learned that authors use time order words to help show sequence. Understanding time order words helps us comprehend nonfiction texts. We are integrating social studies into reading. We are reading and learning about Mary Bethune.
Math Workshop-Last week, we reviewed the words fraction, parts of a whole, parts of a group, common fraction, numerator, and denominator. We also used our fraction bars to learn about equivalent fractions. We are still taking division and multiplication time tests. We have added 30 seconds to the time tests for the students, so all the students get 2 minutes to take the time tests. It is so important to continue practicing the math facts with your child. We need the students fluent in the multiplication and division facts through 10 x 10. Fluent means that the child can give the answer quickly and accurately. It should come natural for them.
Writing Workshop- The third nine week genre is Informational Writing. We are working on writing an informational report. We are writing a report together on Honeybees. We wrote our introduction and first paragraph last week. We also learned how to fill out a graphic organizer before we begin the report. It is so important to use an organizer to help "organize our thoughts".
